Awe in Amman: Connecting to the Unfamiliar

Standing atop the Citadel in Amman, Jordan, I was greeted by a breathtaking view—a cityscape painted in shades of desert gold, sprawling across the hills, ancient yet alive. It was my first time here, but the sight stirred something deeply familiar in my soul. How can a place I’ve never known evoke such a profound sense of connection?

This feeling transcends borders and languages, and there are beautiful words across cultures that attempt to capture it:

  • Sehnsucht (German): A longing for something distant or unreachable. The view of Amman wasn’t just a cityscape; it felt like an imagined memory, as if I’d been yearning for this moment without even knowing it.
  • Yūgen (Japanese): A profound awareness of the universe’s beauty and mystery. The interplay of ancient ruins and modern life in Amman reminded me how places can hold stories far beyond what we can see or understand, sparking wonder and curiosity.
  • Saudade (Portuguese): A melancholic longing for something absent. While new to me, the cityscape seemed to carry a piece of my heart, as if it had always been part of me yet out of reach until this moment.

Moments like these remind us of our shared humanity—the ability to feel deeply connected to something entirely new and unfamiliar. Whether it’s the allure of distant places, the beauty of untold stories, or the pull of imagined homes, our emotions are the bridge that unites us across cultures.

Have you ever felt an unexpected emotional connection to a place you’d never been before? I’d love to hear about it. 🌍✨
